During a Spiritual Healing class in 1998, when I asked if someone of the Light would offer us a teaching about illness, Djwal Khul, (DK), an ascended master I had no previous knowledge of, arrived.
This is what he shared, through me:
The nature of all illness is a set of complex karmic conditions. There is truly no need for illness upon the earth, yet somehow it has become a powerful teacher for human beings as they ascend and move further along the path of the expansion of their hearts and souls.
For some, illness is a form of karmic punishment that an individual spirit decides to take upon itself. For others, it is a lesson in humility. And for others, it is a service to those around them, a way to enhance people's hearts and expand their capacity for compassion. For all, illness is a movement forward. A teaching upon the path. A step a spirit chooses to bring itself into greater loving consciousness, knowingness, and remembrance of its unified identity.
The nature of physical illness seems mysterious much of the time, yet it is not mysterious at all. If only you could see how energetic frequencies blend, merge, shift, and become beings of unknown origin to the human doctors. The things doctors find baffling…if they could only see what is truly occurring, they would be baffled not. It is all so clear and concise.
What appears to be incurable to medical science are actually masses of energetic frequencies that have become bound and tangled. These need to be sorted out, in combination with the soul’s agenda, the person’s psychological state, and of course, their willingness to heal, a combination that often makes curing an illness a complex task.
The psychodynamic nature of an individual either enhances or detracts from the cure. It is always vitally important to determine whether or not the person truly wishes to be cured. Just verbalizing the words “Yes, of course, I wish to be cured; I wish to live,” is not necessarily the deeper truth.
A Story About Me
One of the results of my unhealthy childhood was an internalization of the belief that something was physically wrong with me. Whenever I’d get sick or sense some new feeling in my body, I would think it was potentially fatal. I did not realize how ingrained this conviction was until I was sixty, when, for unknown reasons, I began feeling like I was wearing overlays of family illnesses; they felt like layers encasing my soul. I wanted to be rid of them, so I asked my friend, Joy, to do a healing for me.
After preparing herself, opening a ceremony, and asking all of our spiritual allies to participate, Joy did a remote shamanic journey for me. When our Teacher arrived, he called to the Star People, evolved healers Joy and I had never met.
These energetically refined "people" from a faraway star began by offering us this wisdom:
We will speak with you about overlays.
All beings are eternal, vibrant, Light Beings. Everything overlays this.
Each experience one has while in the body is a result of everything that individual has ever witnessed, heard, or believed. This includes the overlays of family ailments. It’s important to forget those things. To let concepts and memories of someone else’s physical and mental experiences go.
This meant my mother’s breast cancer, my father’s two hip replacements and ongoing Parkinson’s disease, my grandmother’s arthritis, and my grandfather’s sudden death by lung cancer after being a healthy non-smoker his entire life.
During the healing, the Star People peeled energetic overlays from my soul and refined some memories of those family members. They then surrounded my soul, placed their hands on me, and infused me with Light.
When they were complete, they left us with this final teaching:
Your family’s illnesses were theirs. What each one created in their body in their unique life and dimension was all theirs. It had nothing to do with you or with genetics.
Think about that.
I noticed a change the next day. Not only did my body feel lighter, but my mind was freer, with more space to shift my thoughts when I found myself in old belief patterns. Thanks to Joy, our Teacher, and the Star People, whom we never met again, the healing not only expanded my human self but also served as a teaching for my spiritual healer self.
A Story About Roland
In my book, Unity Begins Within, I’ve written extensively about illness and shared stories and teachings on the nuances of spiritual healing. Roland's story is not in my book, and I think it's important to share because it offers us another challenging teaching. The event happened in Hungary in 2001.
Paul’s friend, Samuel, was getting married, and Paul was in charge of the bachelor party. He invited all of Samuel’s best buddies, and at the last minute, asked Roland, the younger brother of one of Samuel’s friends, if he wanted to come. Of course he did.
The evening was predictable—young men celebrating, partying with alcohol and marijuana, and having the time of their lives. At the end of the night, they decided to go swimming in the local river, and under a bright full moon, they raced to see who would be the first one in.
Young Roland sprinted into the shallow river.
The break was instantaneous.
Samuel immediately noticed that Roland was injured and dragged him onto the shoreline. Once he was safely in the hands of medical professionals, the doctors determined that Roland had broken his fourth and fifth vertebrae, as well as his spinal cord. Roland's mother has been caring for all of his needs ever since.
I met Roland about ten years later when I was working in Hungary. Samuel had driven the family over seven hours to see me for a spiritual healing. They were in good spirits, but I felt pressure and wondered, “How can I be of service to these people? Can anything really be done? They’ve come so far and have expectations…”
So, I did what I knew to do—opened a ceremony, called to my helpers, prayed, and surrendered my will to the will of the divine.
During the spiritual healing, my Teacher took me to the scene of the accident, and I watched it unfold. There was Roland, running and laughing. What a joyful man.
He felt the break the instant he dove into the shallow water. I saw his face and felt his fearful knowing as a—"this is really bad"—feeling washed over him. I watched Paul gently bring Roland to the shore. The others barely moved, appearing to be frozen in shock.
That was when my Teacher stepped in and placed his skillful hands inside Roland’s neck and reset the vertebrae.
My Teacher:
In a situation like this, the sooner the repair is done, the faster and easier the healing becomes. Humans can surely heal from injuries such as this, yet without the energetic body restored to its healthy state, the manifestation, disharmony, or whatever it might be, will affect the physical body. The longer the template of disharmony exists, the more solidified it becomes in the human body. Thus, the longer the healing process will be, if the person is able to heal at all.
Once Roland’s vertebrae were realigned, my Teacher placed his hands upon him, performed another healing, and said it was time to return this part/the energetic part of Roland, to his soul.
He wanted me to tell Roland:
Continue your path of healing, my son. Persevere with the strength of will that has always been a part of you. See yourself running; always see yourself running. This will remind your body of what it is capable of. Allow those who love you to care for you and become the man you were always meant to be. Use your mind. It is a powerful tool for you, my son. Exercise it daily with visions of your full recovery.
I completed the healing, shared my experience, and closed the ceremony. Roland said that he was feeling lighter and more calm. He appreciated my connection with the event at the river and agreed to live by my Teacher's words. He didn't expect to miraculously walk out of the room, although of course, it was everyone's wishes, including mine. Samuel and the family were loving and grateful. We all cried.
An interesting note about this healing story—when Roland’s father was twenty-one years old, he fell out of a tree and broke his fifth and sixth vertebrae. He now limps and walks a little hunched over, but otherwise is fine. His spinal cord did not break during his fall.
Roland loved, admired, and emulated his father. I wonder how much he wanted to be like him? How much our love and admiration for another unconsciously affects our lives. I will always honor Roland as a great teacher.
Summation
As a spiritual healer, I cannot claim to understand the intricacies of anyone’s personal healing path. I do know this: the state of our soul affects us in all areas of our lives. And while I’m grateful to no longer be affected by energetic overlays, I always cringe when I hear people say things like, “My mother had (fill in the blank), so, I’ll probably get it.” And I pray that when something physically drastic happens to a person—a spinal cord injury, heart attack, a physical problem of any kind—a spiritual healer is there to correct the disharmony in the energetic body before, during, or immediately after the doctors arrive.
According to DK's teachings, we know there is a spiritual purpose for human illness. It’s the dilemma of the two paths—spirit and human— and the purpose and intention of each one that obscures our understanding. Why any illness or physical or emotional disharmony occurs is one thing; being conscious of our soul's journey is another. I believe that compassion for oneself and others is called for in every situation.
I’d like to close with these final words from DK.:
All illness is curable, yet who is manifesting the illness? Why? What is the purpose? When there is no more need for illness upon the earth, it will no longer exist. The consciousness of spirit must and can evolve past the need for illness.
