In 2003, my large, black lab, Amigo, was overly interested in Misty, our new grey, fluffy kitten. One evening, I heard a commotion in the bathroom and ran in to find Amigo holding Misty in his mouth by the scruff of her neck. I could tell that he was just about to shake her, which would have meant instant death, and yelled, “Amigo! No!” Luckily, he listened and immediately dropped her and ran outside. I bent down, picked up limp, little Misty and held her to my chest. I found a soft blanket to wrap her in, tenderly embraced her in my arms, and went into the living room where I sat on the couch. She wasn't bleeding, yet her life force was minimal. I knew Misty needed a soul retrieval, so I closed my eyes and called to my Teacher and power animal.
They took me somewhere in the upper worlds to what looked like an endless, rapidly spinning, horizontal vortex. Misty was caught in its violent currents and was being swept away. I could barely see her. Panicked, I looked at my Teacher and said, “I can’t go in there,” but before I completed my sentence, my power animal pranced in and disappeared. After what felt like an eternity, he finally emerged holding Misty gently in his mouth. He lowered his head so I could receive her into my waiting energy hands. As I cradled Misty's body against my heart, we went to my power spot in the lower world. Still holding soul-part Misty, I placed her in the mystical healing waters and waited while the water's magic revived her, which it did. I stroked her soft, silky body, kissed her, and then transferred healed Misty from the spirit world into her body in the physical world. My Teacher said she would be fine within twenty-four hours.
This was true.
Five days later, I heard a cacophony of dog and cat sounds outside. Amigo was chasing the cats. Zeke, the adult cat, was too savvy to be caught, but Misty was not, and with no command to adhere to, Amigo caught and killed her. I screamed and severely reprimanded him. Angry, heartbroken, and confused, I went inside, found the blanket from the previous week and wrapped Misty's lifeless body in it. Then, I went into the garden, said a prayer and buried her underneath my favorite yellow rosebush.
Later that day I asked my Teacher what the overview of the week’s drama had been about.
Misty and Amigo had had a former life together as human beings, something I did not know was possible. During that lifetime, Amigo/the man was energetically drawn to Misty/the woman, but she had shunned him. This intensive dynamic remained unresolved upon their deaths, and for reasons unknown, both had chosen to be with me as Teachers in animal form while they played out and resolved their karma.
All life are spirit in form. Spirit is not limited to a species.
Shamanic soul retrieval can restore a being from near death, although
Unless remaining alive is part of its destiny, the being will die soon afterward.
Misty completed her purpose and returned to the Spirit Realm.
I eventually forgave Amigo, who ended up developing a harmonious friendship with my other cat, Zeke.
My wise friend, Joy, summed it up well: “Animals don’t agonize over death the way we do. They live in the moment. And if Unity is the ultimate truth, then their transformation is no different than ours. From the perspective of the Whole, I suppose the births and deaths of animals/plants/etc. are more like this—they come and go. The Universe is constantly growing, transforming, and renewing. Even cells are born and die all day long. There’s a bigger picture here. One that knows the right timing of everything. Where I can embrace the cycles of life and feel and remember my part in them.”
Twenty-two years later, I remain grateful to Misty, Amigo, my power animal, my spirit Teacher, and Joy for the teachings.

Thanks for sharing, Annie.
You are so welcome!
Thanks, Annie, this is great, and perfect timing. Just this week I journeyed to my Tripawd Chihuahua, Robin. My intention was to let him know he would be having surgery the next day, that I love him very much, and what does he want me to know. While not a full soul retrieval like you did, I had a valuable experience meeting my little guy in the meadow (where I always go on journeys), and I saw orange and yellow butterflies, and Robin was full of energy and life and he said, “Run and Play!” Thank you for teaching me how to journey to my animals and trust what I find and hear from them. They are so beloved to us, aren’t they? PS Robin is recovering great.
I love your story. Connecting with our pets through the shamanic journey and then following through in this reality is powerful. I’ve worked in shamanic ways with a number of animals and the results are amazing. Thank you for sharing.
